Workday's AI Agents: What's Live and What's Coming
A full status table of Workday's 17 production agents and 3 on the way, organized by HR, finance, implementation and employee self-service.

Analyst-day coverage splits Bhusri's 20 agents into 17 in production and three on the way. Here's what Workday lists now, with the status Workday has published. Where Workday hasn't given a status, we say so.
HR
| Agent | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll Agent | Checks payroll data and flags problems before payroll runs | In use; autopilot to early adopters in early 2027 |
| Talent Acquisition Agent | Sources and grades candidates, schedules interviews | Available; autopilot with early adopters now, general availability planned for early 2027 |
| Workforce Management Agent | Frontline scheduling and self-service | No status published |
| Organizational Development Agent | Job architecture and org modeling | No status published |
The Payroll Agent is the most mature HR agent. It runs checks on payroll data before each cycle — catching issues like missing tax elections, incorrect earning codes, or pay rate changes that weren't reflected in the current period. The autopilot version, coming in early 2027, will go further: flagging and in some cases resolving issues without a human kicking off the check.
The Talent Acquisition Agent is moving fastest. Bhusri says it's delivering "better than 50% ROI" for customers already using it. It screens candidates against job requirements, suggests interview panels, and prepares briefing materials for interviewers. The agent is only as good as the job architecture it reads — clean job profiles and well-defined requisition processes are prerequisites.
Finance
| Agent | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Financial Audit Agent | Audit sample requests in procure-to-pay | In use |
| Financial Test Suite | Ongoing testing of financial controls | With a limited set of customers |
| Accounting Agent | Controls testing, audit readiness and close | Autopilot to early adopters in early 2027 |
| Contracts Agent | Contract intelligence, negotiation and workflow | No status published |
| Procurement Agent | Supplier contracts and accounts payable | No status published |
| Travel Agent | In-policy booking and expense reports | In use |
| Decision Intelligence | Decision support for HR and finance | No status published |
Finance is where Bhusri sees the biggest opportunity. "CFOs forever have talked about lights-out finance," he told Fortune. The Financial Audit Agent is already reducing the time and cost of audit sample requests in procure-to-pay. The Contracts Agent has helped customers find millions in procurement overspend — work that "would take humans a year."
The Accounting Agent is the one to watch. It supports controls testing, audit readiness, and close processes. If it performs as described, it could materially reduce the manual effort involved in monthly and quarterly close, where finance teams today spend days reconciling accounts, verifying journal entries, and running control tests by hand.
Implementation and IT
| Agent | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment Agent | Finds new capabilities to adopt and prepares setup plans | In use by nearly 5,000 customers; autopilot to early adopters in early 2027 |
| Developer Agent | Lets customers build their own apps and agents on Workday | Generally available since October 2026 |
| Adoption Agent | Listed by Workday | Few public details |
| BP Optimize Agent | Listed by Workday | Few public details |
The Deployment Agent has the widest adoption of any Workday agent. Nearly 5,000 customers have enabled it since its launch in September 2025. It scans a tenant for features the customer isn't using, recommends which to adopt, and generates configuration plans. This is the agent Bhusri points to when he says the year-long, consultant-heavy implementation model is ending.
The Developer Agent, generally available since October 2026, lets customers build their own apps and agents on Workday using natural language. Combined with Custom Agents (built in Workday Extend AI), this opens up a platform play: customers can extend Workday's agent framework to cover processes Workday's own agents don't address.
Every employee
| Agent | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Self-Service Agent | Help desk for employees and managers, built on Sana | Generally available in Microsoft Copilot, Teams, Slack and Gemini Enterprise |
| Sana Concierge | HR and IT service requests | Early adopters; general availability expected Q1 2027 |
| Sana Coach | Feedback and coaching | Early access |
Sana is the new Workday Home — the single interface employees use to ask questions, request actions, and check on agent activity. Bhusri calls the Self-Service Agent Workday's "killer agent." It deflects 25 to 30% of HR service desk cases today, and he expects that to reach 80 to 90% as the technology matures.
The Self-Service Agent is available across Microsoft Copilot, Teams, Slack, and Gemini Enterprise, with Claude in early access. This is notable: employees interact with the agent through tools they already use, not by logging into Workday.
What stands out
Implementation is changing first. The Deployment Agent is one of the most widely switched-on agents, and Bhusri says the year-long, consultant-heavy project "is going to go away." For consulting firms built around that model, this is an existential shift. For customers, it means faster time to value — but only if the data and configuration underneath are solid.
Finance is moving fast. Bhusri calls what's happening in audit, controls testing and close "almost like a renaissance." The combination of the Financial Audit Agent, Financial Test Suite, and Accounting Agent could meaningfully reduce the manual effort in financial governance.
People stay in charge. "In all cases, in the agents that are being used, there's a human that's managing those agents," he said. Every agent Workday has shipped so far operates under human oversight. The autopilot versions coming in 2027 will execute more tasks independently, but humans still set the policies and review the results.
One gap worth naming. These agents work inside Workday. During a migration, the open question is whether data from the old system arrived intact, and that check starts outside Workday. It's the problem ValidateIQ was built to solve.
How agents interact with each other
Workday hasn't published a detailed map of agent-to-agent interactions, but the architecture implies several dependencies:
- The Payroll Agent reads data that the Workforce Management Agent helps manage (schedules, time)
- The Self-Service Agent routes requests through business processes that the BP Optimize Agent is designed to improve
- The Deployment Agent discovers configuration changes that the Adoption Agent helps users adopt
- The Developer Agent and Custom Agents extend the framework for processes no other agent covers
This means tenant readiness isn't just about enabling one agent — it's about the foundation all of them share.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enable Workday AI agents? Most agents are enabled through Workday's feature adoption process. The Deployment Agent can recommend which agents to adopt based on your tenant configuration. Your Workday partner or AMS provider can help with security configuration and testing.
Are Workday agents included in my license? Workday includes many agents as part of the platform. Some, like the Developer Agent and Custom Agents, may have additional licensing considerations. Check with Workday or your Workday partner for current pricing.
What's the difference between an agent and an autopilot? An agent assists a human — flagging issues, recommending actions, preparing information. An autopilot agent takes action on its own within defined guardrails. Workday is rolling out autopilot versions of several agents starting in early 2027.
