Workday's Finance Agents
Audit, controls testing, contracts, procurement and travel: how Workday's finance agents work and what CFOs need from their tenant to get results.

Bhusri thinks finance may be the most interesting place for agents. "CFOs forever have talked about lights-out finance," he told Fortune, and cloud "only took us so far." With agents, he sees "almost like a renaissance in the finance world."
The promise is compelling: agents that can continuously test financial controls, catch audit issues in real time, find overspending in procurement contracts, and reduce the manual effort of monthly close. But the promise only holds if the financial data and configuration underneath are solid.
The agents
Financial Audit Agent
Handles audit sample requests in procure-to-pay. It's in use and documented in Workday's admin guide. Bhusri expects companies to spend less on outside audits as agents pick up more of the work.
The agent automates the sampling and testing that auditors traditionally perform manually — selecting transactions based on risk criteria, verifying that proper approvals were obtained, checking that transactions comply with configured policies. It runs continuously, which means issues surface during the period rather than at year-end when they're expensive to remediate.
For this agent to add value, your procure-to-pay process needs to be configured correctly. Approval thresholds, spend authorization policies, three-way match rules, and supplier validation controls all need to reflect your actual policies, not the defaults from implementation.
Financial Test Suite
Tests financial controls on an ongoing basis, so problems show up during the period instead of at close. It's been with a limited set of customers.
Think of this as continuous SOX testing. Instead of pulling samples once a quarter and hoping nothing went wrong in between, the Financial Test Suite runs control tests continuously against your configured policies. It can catch a segregation-of-duties violation the day it's created, rather than three months later during the quarterly review.
The controls it tests are the controls you've configured. If your Workday security configuration doesn't enforce the segregation of duties your SOX documentation describes, the agent will test against what's actually configured — not what should be.
Accounting Agent
Supports controls testing, audit readiness and close. An autopilot version reaches early adopters in early 2027.
The Accounting Agent is designed to reduce the manual effort in the financial close process. It can assist with account reconciliations, journal entry review, intercompany eliminations, and close task management. For organizations where the close process takes 10 to 15 business days — with finance teams working nights and weekends — the potential time savings are significant.
Contracts Agent
Combines contract intelligence, negotiation and workflow. Bhusri says customers have used contract intelligence to find overspending in procurement contracts and save millions, work that "would take humans a year."
The agent can analyze a portfolio of contracts to identify pricing inconsistencies, expiring agreements, auto-renewal clauses, and terms that deviate from your standard templates. For organizations managing thousands of supplier contracts, this type of analysis is nearly impossible to do manually.
Procurement Agent
Covers supplier contracts, accounts payable and contract negotiation. Strategic sourcing and intake are listed as coming soon.
This agent extends the procurement workflow — from requisition through purchase order through invoice processing. It can validate invoices against contracts, flag pricing discrepancies, and route exceptions for review. The strategic sourcing capability, when it ships, could help procurement teams evaluate suppliers against defined criteria.
Travel Agent
Books in-policy travel and drafts expense reports. This is one of the more straightforward agents — it applies your travel policy to booking requests, flags out-of-policy selections, and pre-populates expense reports from booking data.
Decision Intelligence
Decision support for finance and HR. Workday has published limited details on this agent.
What they need from you
A finance agent can't fix a broken structure. The financial data model — cost centers, companies, ledger accounts, worktags, revenue categories — has to be set up properly before agents can do meaningful work on top of it.
Foundation data model. Cost centers, companies, ledger accounts and worktags have to be set up properly. If your chart of accounts was migrated with mapping errors, every report the agent generates will carry those errors forward. If worktag hierarchies don't reflect your current operational structure, the agent's analytics will group transactions incorrectly.
Opening balances and history. Opening balances and history from the old ERP have to tie out exactly. The Accounting Agent reconciles accounts against expected balances. If the opening balances were wrong from day one, every subsequent reconciliation inherits that error. Journal entries brought over from the legacy system need to net to zero across the right accounts.
Supplier and contract data. The Contracts and Procurement agents need accurate supplier records — correct legal entity names, valid bank account details, current contract terms, and proper tax identifiers. Supplier data is one of the most error-prone areas in a migration because it often comes from multiple source systems with inconsistent formatting.
Configured controls. The Financial Test Suite tests the controls you've configured, so those controls need to match your policies. If your SOX narrative describes a $10,000 approval threshold but your Workday business process is set to $25,000, the agent will test against $25,000 and your auditors will test against $10,000.
Segregation of duties. With agents acting on financial data, segregation of duties becomes more complex. You need to ensure that agent roles don't create SoD conflicts with human roles — for example, an agent that creates journal entries shouldn't also be able to approve them, even if it's technically a different "user."
How we help
ValidateIQ checks every converted finance record across the source system, the workbook and Workday, so the agents start from books that balance. We design the foundation data model, worktags and business processes in Workday Financials, connect Workday to banks and procurement systems, and set up segregation of duties for people and agents. For reporting the agents don't cover, we build in Prism Analytics. After go-live, our AMS team keeps finance configuration current.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Financial Audit Agent replace my external auditors? Not today. The agent automates internal testing and sampling — work that your internal audit team or your external auditors' staff currently do manually. It can reduce the scope and cost of external audits by providing continuous testing evidence, but it doesn't replace the independent assurance that external auditors provide.
How does the Financial Test Suite handle SOX compliance? It tests the controls you've configured in Workday against your defined policies. It's a tool for continuous monitoring, not a SOX compliance framework. You still need to define your controls, document your narratives, and ensure your Workday configuration matches. The agent makes testing faster and more continuous.
What happens if opening balances are wrong? Every subsequent reconciliation inherits the error. The Accounting Agent will flag reconciliation variances, but it can't determine whether the variance is from a current-period issue or a carryover from a bad opening balance. ValidateIQ catches opening balance mismatches before go-live, so the agents start from books that tie out.
